AeroPress
What is an AeroPress?
AeroPress is a 3 in 1 piston style coffee brewer which brews coffee with the unique flavours of espresso, pour-over and french press coffee from one compact and portable device - The AeroPress.
Invented by Alan Adler and released in 2005, the AeroPress slick designed captured the imagination of coffee lovers and gained a following that spawned its own World AeroPress Championships that began in Oslo, Norway in 2008.
When drinking an Aeropress brewed coffee, generally it will have a cleaner taste accompanied with distinct clarity (flavor notes) that is attributed to the paper filter reducing the coffee oil and sediments from getting into your coffee.
Standard AeroPress Brewing Technique
Brew Beverage - Coffee
Brew Ratio - 1:15 method (15g of coffee : 250g of Water)
Brew Time - 5 Minutes (Roughly)
1. Setup AeroPress by placing in a filter paper.
- Optionally you may choose to wet the filter paper once its in the AeroPress.
2. Weight and grind up 15 - 16 grams (g) of coffee to a medium-fine grind size.
- Note: Slightly finer than a French Press grind size.
3. Re-weight your grind to ensure its about 15g of coffee.
4. Drop your coffee grind into the AeroPress.
5. Now the coffee ground will be in a hump / dome shape, shake the AeroPress to settle the coffee grounds as flat as possible to allow for even brewing.
6. Boil about 300g of water and let it settle to about:-
- Light Roast: 93C to 97C
- Medium Roast: 93C to 95C
- Darker Roast: 85C to 90C
7. Pour in 100g of water into the AeroPress in a circular motion in a span of roughly 10 seconds.
- Additionally, you may use a wooden chopstick to gently stir in a 'W' shape from side to side for 5 seconds during the blooming period.
8. Now allow your coffee to bloom for 1:30 minutes.
9. Pour the remaining 150g of water into your AeroPress again in a circular motion in a span of roughly 15 seconds.
10. Gently stir your coffee in a 'W' shape from side to side using the wooden chopstick or metal spoon (this will allow even flow).
11. Seal your AeroPress with the piston and let it brew for 2:30 minutes.
12. After 2:30 minutes, pick up and swirl your AeroPress a few times (be careful for drips) – this is to knock down the coffee crust that has formed.
13. Gently and slowly press down the piston all the way down, this is not a race so take your time roughly 45 seconds to 1 minute.
14. Once you hear a hiss, press through and your coffee brew is complete. Time to drink!
15. Cleanup – unlock the head of the AeroPress and push the piston to pop the coffee grounds out of the AeroPress. Rise under water to clean the parts with soap when required.
